Should We Get Rid of the Honor Roll?

Bumper stickers that read “My child is an honor student” are a common sight on cars across the country. But they soon will become harder to find in Virginia Beach, Virginia. By fall 2015, all of the city’s elementary schools will have ditched the honor roll. Some schools are coming up with new awards for achievements other than having the best grades. These include recognizing students who turn in all their work on time, behave in class, and show big improvements from one report card to the next.

But not everyone is applauding the city’s decision to get rid of the honor roll. Critics say it’s important to reward students who get good grades. They argue that having the honor roll motivates students to do well in school.
