Should School Be Year-Round?

Most students can look forward to having a couple of months off during the summer—unless they attend one of nearly 3,000 year-round schools in the U.S. These schools are in session the same number of days as other schools. But instead of a long summer vacation, they take a few two- to four-week breaks throughout the year. Officials at these schools say students can learn more without long interruptions in class time. With shorter breaks, teachers spend less time reviewing material when students return to school.

But people who favor longer breaks say students at year-round schools miss out on fun activities like summer camps. They also argue that these schools spend more on air-conditioning and other expenses.
