Are Trampolines Too Dangerous?

Many kids love to bounce on trampolines. Each year, however, tens of thousands of kids are landing in the hospital. A recent study showed that trampoline injuries led to more than 1 million emergency room visits between 2002 and 2011. Many kids were treated for minor scrapes or sprains, but others suffered serious injuries and some even died.

America’s largest group of children’s doctors says the risks of using a trampoline are too great. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that trampolines never be used at home or on the playground.

But not everyone thinks kids should stop bouncing just yet. Some people point out that any physical activity can be risky. For example, each year more kids are injured while riding bikes than using trampolines. Many parents say the key is to take steps to make trampolines safer. These include putting a safety net around the trampoline and allowing only one kid to jump at a time.
